What I did was read a book with 2,666 pages. While a rose by any other name may well smell as sweet, the title of a book is most frequently inextricably linked to the nature and quality of the story contained within. As I was reading the passage in Bolaño's novel 2666 on page 40 through 41 I was reminded of the article from the New York Times we read last week entitled, “Analyzing Literature and Words by Numbers”. Calling Roberto Bolano's 2666 a novel is somewhat misleading. Certainly, it bears many attributes of a work of long fiction – memorable characters, richly evoked locations, abundant action, recurrent themes. In the New York Times, Steven Millhauser recently wrote about the distinctions between the genre of the short story and the novel. No, I didn't buy 2,666 Brussels sprouts. 2666, a novel by Chilean writer, Roberto Bolano, was published posthumously in 2004. I have very little patience for books I'm not enjoying and I have no reluctance to put a book down forever if I'm not getting "pleasure"* from it.
